Fireplace safety screens were already becoming nearly invisible. In at least one new fireplace, they're gone altogether. Napoleon's propane- or natural gas–fueled Luxuria Linear Series features Dynamic Heat Control, which redirects heat away from the fireplace opening, eliminating the need for a screen, reports Mary Salmonsen in Builder. "This heat can be vented elsewhere in the home or outside, allowing homeowners to enjoy their fireplace year-round at a comfortable temperature," she writes. "The Glass Guard remains safe to the touch, and provides both protection and a clear view into the hearth. Taken together, these systems eliminate the need for a mesh safety screen and allow viewers to enjoy their fireplace without any visual barriers." The only thing more comforting than a beautiful fireplace in the winter is resting easy knowing that small children and pets are safe nearby.
