The Master of Science degree in Human Resource Education (MS in HRE) program is specifically designed as an applied program that focuses on a harmonious balance of theory and practice. Students experience the program in ways that help them hone and develop skills in a wide range of areas including training and development for today's globalized world.

Training and development is a key component of the human resource function, and most organizations consider training and development as an integral part of the human resource development activity. At some point or another, all employees in all organizations will require some level of training and development, regardless of their education or position in the organization. The turn of the century has seen increased focus on training and development in organizations globally.

In the Training in Global Organizations (HRE4579) course, for example, students focus on developing their understanding of cross-cultural communication and adaptation, while learning how to foster the development of cross-cultural skills in others through the design and delivery of formal training.

After completing the course, students will learn specific techniques and they will be able to:

  • Describe the imperative for effective cross-cultural communication in today's world.
  • Describe the role of culture in intercultural communication.
  • Explain the concept of intercultural competence.
  • Describe the development of personal self-awareness of cultural values and traits.
  • Outline fundamental principles of training for intercultural competence.
  • Describe various types of cross-cultural techniques and their appropriate uses.
  • Clarify factors, issues and problems that influence adaptation of individuals in cross-cultural work environments and apply this learning to a specific location.
  • Design and develop a training orientation program for a person going to live, work or study in another country or culture.

HR practitioners working in the area of training and development -- or anyone seeking to work in this area -- will develop these capabilities, which are highly transferable and can be applied in a wide range of organizations, positions and environments.
